Perspiration (sweating) is a natural body function that serves primarily as a means of thermoregulation. In other words, sweat allows the body to regulate its temperature. Unfortunately, sweat contributes to body odour when its is metabolised by bacteria on the skin. Sweat odour can be quite unpleasant, so many people use deodorants and antiperspirants to prevent it. Modern manufacturers offer a wide range of deodorants and antiperspirants, but mass-market products may have negative health effects such as allergic reactions, irritation and even hidradenitis (sweat gland inflammation). That's why more and more people choose natural mineral salt deodorants.

First and foremost, let us figure out the difference between deodorants and antiperspirants. A deodorant is a cosmetic product designed to prevent body odour caused by the bacterial breakdown of sweat. Deodorants often contain alcohol because it temporarily kills bacteria that metabolise sweat and thus cause sweat odour.

Some deodorants contain more persistent antimicrobial agents such as triclosan. They can also be formulated with essential oils or perfume fragrances intended to mask the odour of sweat. However, the effect of deodorants is temporary. Sooner or later, the bacteria start growing again, so to prevent body odour, you need to reapply deodorant several times a day.

Antiperspirants are a type of deodorant, but they are often opposed to regular deodorants. While deodorants prevent body odour but do not affect perspiration, antiperspirants are designed to reduce perspiration or even stop it completely. Most antiperspirants contain aluminium salts that prevent the sweat glands from excreting liquid. They also cause the pores to contract.

Antiperspirants may seem like a perfect solution for coping with body odour and excessive perspiration, but they have some flaws. First, they may cause inflammation of sweat glands. Second, constant use of antiperspirants may disrupt thermoregulation, which is especially dangerous in hot weather. That is why you shouldn't use antiperspirants all the time. And you absolutely must not use them when you're going to exercise, because if you don't sweat when you're exercising, you can overheat very quickly.

There is also a third kind of deodorant which is often referred to as natural deodorant crystal. Such deodorants are a formulated with potassium alum, a naturally occurring sulfate mineral. Potassium alum inhibits the growth of the bacteria that cause body odour, that's why it has been used as a natural deodorant throughout history in the Far East, Thailand, Mexico and other countries. Another type of alum, ammonium alum, can also be found in natural deodorants, although potassium alum is more commonly used.

Unlike aluminium chloride, aluminium chorolydrate and other aluminium compounds contained in modern commercial deodorants, alums rarely cause skin irritation and do not plug sweat gland ducts. Alums have astringent, hemostatic and antibacterial properties and are, therefore, used in medicine as an astringent/styptic and antiseptic. Natural deodorants made of alums have gained new-found popularity as an alternative to mass market deodorants and antiperspirants.

In deodorants, potassium alum and ammonium alum eliminate the bacteria that cause unpleasant body odor. All you have to do is slightly moisten the top of the crystal and apply it on clean skin. It will create a thin protective layer that prevents the growth of bacteria, allows your skin to breathe and remains effective up to 24 hours.

As natural mineral salt deodorants are made of alum crystals, they are often referred to as deodorant crystals, crystal deodorants, deodorant rocks or deodorant stones. However, not all natural deodorants are made of whole alum crystals. Some manufacturers also produce more habitual deodorants sticks, sprays and roll-ons formulated with alums. Such deodorants typically consist of purified water, alums and natural preservatives. Some products are enriched with natural essential oils and herbal extracts.

Natural mineral salt deodorants effectively prevent body odour and leave no trace on clothes. They contain no harmful chemicals such as aluminium chlorohydrate, aluminium zirconium, parabens and phthalates. Natural deodorants are becoming increasingly popular among consumers all other the world. Our online shop Organic Store offers deodorant crystals produced by different brands such as Crystal (USA), Lafe's (USA) and Grace (Thailand). Try them out and see how good they are!
